Experiencing International Rugby Culture Up Close!

Düsseldorf Dragons U12 at the International Rugby Tournament in Laon

An unforgettable rugby weekend lies behind our U12 team from the Düsseldorf Dragons: From May 2nd to 4th, 20 of our players took part in the internationally renowned youth tournament in Laon, France – alongside 21 other U12 teams from France, Belgium, England, and Germany.

The journey began on Friday afternoon with three minibuses, plenty of anticipation in the luggage, and a huge dose of team spirit on board. And that team spirit would define the entire weekend – both on and off the pitch.

The tournament offered our young players a rare opportunity to compete with teams from other rugby nations. They faced a wide range of playing styles, tactics, and high-level opponents such as Château Thierry, Thiérache, Cambrai, Canterbury, Laon, and Cologne. Despite the tough competition, our Dragons fought hard and secured an impressive 14th place out of 22 teams – a great achievement the whole team can be proud of!

Beyond the athletic competition, the focus was also on community and connection. The days in Laon were filled with shared experiences, mutual support, and genuine team-building. A special highlight: our friends from Cologne were also present with their U12 team, and both clubs shared a friendly tent camp – another step in strengthening our tightly connected rugby community.

A huge thank-you goes to the hosting rugby club in Laon, which organised the tournament with tremendous dedication, warm French hospitality, and true savoir-vivre. From multiple daily meals to the tournament structure, everything was perfectly planned and lovingly arranged – a big compliment to the French organising team!

We also want to thank all those who made this weekend an unforgettable experience:
The three coaches, who not only provided excellent on-field support but also safely drove the children to and from Laon.
All the helping hands on site, who took care of water, cool packs, plasters, comfort after defeats, and gave loud and heartfelt support – your contribution was invaluable.
And, of course, the children themselves, who played with courage, fairness, and true sportsmanship, gaining experience with every minute on the field.

Filled with impressions and strengthened team spirit, our U12 team returned to Düsseldorf on Sunday evening. This weekend will remain in everyone's memory for a long time – and is the perfect motivation for the rest of the season!
